Whether conducting research in the lab at one of the state’s largest medical centers, or teaching chemistry and pharmacology classes at Texas Wesleyan, Dr. Dieckmann has always enjoyed her work. She joined the Wesleyan faculty in 2004 teaching undergraduate chemistry courses, and moved to the Doctorate of Nurse Anesthesia Practice program in 2008. A versatile and gifted educator, Dr. Dieckmann has taught 17 different courses since coming to Wesleyan and, in 2011, she was presented the Board of Trustees Award for Excellence in Teaching.
Dr. Dieckmann’s DNAP courses are completely online and her students are dispersed across the United States and beyond. It’s not unusual, she said, to have students who are on active military duty and stationed overseas. Despite their diversity in terms of location, all of her students have one thing in common: they are all experts in nurse anesthesia.
“Because they are already highly competent, they want to take their thinking to the next level. From me, they want to learn molecules. From their peers, they want to learn how anesthesia is practiced differently in different places.
“The centerpiece of my class is discussion. Each student selects a topic that’s relevant to them and then researches that topic. They then present their research to the class for asynchronous online discussion. That’s where we all meet.”
One of the many things Dr. Dieckmann enjoys about teaching at Wesleyan is “being able to design my own curriculum and courses. It allows me to try new things.”
Trying new things is what she requires of her students, also. “My goal as a teacher is to guide students in the acquisition of knowledge. Students are encouraged to work hard, persevere, reach for the next higher goal, and never stop learning new things.”

Did You Know?
As a busy educator and mother of one, Dr. Dieckmann does not have much free time. When she does, she enjoys creating art and has won awards for some of her ceramic sculptures.
