FORT WORTH, TX: Saturday night, on head coach Josh Gibbs’ birthday, the Texas Wesleyan University women’s soccer team (3-0) took a 1-0 win in the 107th minute over Oklahoma Baptist University (1-1) at Martin Field.
The two teams battled to a scoreless draw through regulation with the Lady Rams holding a slim 20-17 margin in shots.
With one minute to play in the first overtime period, OBU’s Sarah Robinson made a terrific save, her eighth of the day, on a shot from Texas Wesleyan’s Alejandra Barrera to keep the game scoreless.
With 3:53 remaining in the final overtime period, Christina Zimmerman gathered the ball on the far right side and hit Vanessa Lopez in the box for the game-winning goal.
For the game, Texas Wesleyan outshot Oklahoma Baptist 24-20 and held a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Katy Houchin made five saves for the Lady Rams while posting her second save of the season.
“What a way to spend a birthday,” Gibbs commented. “I thought that we were not the better team today. We did not play well, but this group gutted it out and found a way to win. The girls really came together and got through a day when they weren’t playing their best, and I think that is the mark of a really good team.”
The Lady Rams have little time to rest as they host Schreiner University at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday.
