FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University men’s soccer team (5-0) took a 2-1 win over sixth ranked Oklahoma City University (1-1-1) at Martin Field on Tuesday. The win was the first for Texas Wesleyan over a top-ten opponent and also pushed the Rams’ all-time best start to 5-0.
Theo Nabassi got the Rams started on the right foot when he scored off an assist from John Kuethe in the 7th minute. Ten minutes later, Adis Druzanovic found himself alone just past midfield and drove in for another score on the team’s third shot of the day.
Meanwhile Toby Rochau made five saves in the first period to hold Oklahoma City scoreless at halftime.
Just 1:37 into the second half, Steven Short’s corner kick found John Dill for a goal to bring OCU to within one. The Texas Wesleyan defense was up to the task, and Rochau added three second half saves to hold the Stars at bay.
Oklahoma City outshot Texas Wesleyan 25-12. Rochau finished with eight saves while his counterpart, Andy Fitzpatrick made three stops for OCU.
The win was also the first for the Rams over Oklahoma City who had won the previous seven meetings. The game aslo came at the tale end of a stretch of three games in four days for Texas Wesleyan.
“That Oklahoma City team is unbelievable,” commented head coach Josh Gibbs. “I can’t give them enough credit. We had fewer chances today, but we made the most of them and stood toe to toe with a very talented team.”
The Rams will return to action on Friday, September 11, when they host Bethany College. The Rams will be celebrating military appreciation day. That game is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. start at Martin Field.
