LADY RAMS OUTSHINE STARS
September 8, 2009

FORT WORTH, TX:  The 21st ranked Texas Wesleyan University women’s soccer team (5-0) took an impressive 5-3 win over perennial NAIA Powerhouse Oklahoma City University (1-2) at Martin Field on Tuesday.

With the win, the Rams pushed their all-time best start to 5-0.

A goal from Sarah Leonard in the 3rd minute, gave OCU an early 1-0 lead.  In the 43rd minute, OCU’s Brittany Tibbs stopped a Jaimie Romaguera shot, but Cara Lumpkin collected the rebound and scored the equalizer.  The Rams survived a lackluster start and went to the break tied 1-1.

In the 51st minute, Vanessa Lopez corralled her own rebound and scored to give the Lady Rams a 2-1 advantage.  Just 2:47 later, Romaguera found Lateah Lucero with a tremendous pass through the midfield for another score.

The Rams made it 4-1 when Jacqueline Wittman finished a terrific feed from Christina Zimmerman in the 70th minute.  OCU got back on the board when Malin Andersson’s corner kick found the net.

Lopez got that goal back in the 81st minute off a double-assist from Lumpkin and Romaguera.  The Stars’ Sarah Burnett scored in the 89th minute to account for the 5-3 final score.

For the game, Texas Wesleyan outshot Oklahoma City 15-13.  Katy Houchin (5-0) made five saves in the win, while Tibbs made six stops for OCU.

“We didn’t have our best defensive day,” commented head coach Josh Gibbs, “but our girls really responded to the challenge in the second half.  To score five goals against a very good Oklahoma City team is really impressive.  This team continues to impress me.”

The Lady Rams will return to the field on Friday, when they travel to Denton, TX, to take on Texas Woman’s University.  That game is scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. start.
