RAMS TIE RECORD WITH RAINSOAKED WIN
September 11, 2009

Box Score

FORT WORTH, TX:  The Texas Wesleyan University men’s soccer team (6-0) took a 1-0 win in the rain over Bethany College (1-2) at Martin Field on Friday.  With the win, the Rams extended their best start in school history, and, at 6-0, they have tied the school record for longest winning streak.

Previously the programs’ best start had been 3-0 in 1993 and 2003.  The 1993 squad also had a six-game winning streak.

On Friday, rain began to fall during warm-ups and the start was delayed by approximately 45 minutes due to lightning in the vicinity.  Rain continued to fall throughout the contest.

As conditions grew steadily worse, the two teams battled to a scoreless tie in the first half.  In the 78th minute, Bethany goalkeeper, Logan Adams, cleared a cross out of the box.  Kevin Rauch collected the ball outside the box and found the back of the net for the game’s only score.

Joakim Soderbaum (3-0) needed just two saves to preserve the shutout.  Texas Wesleyan outshot Bethany 27-17 and 9-2 in shots on goal.

“The weather was tough for both teams,” said head coach Josh Gibbs.  “I thought we were the better team from start to finish, but the conditions made it very tough to finish.  It’s good to be 6-0.  We’ll take the win and prepare for USAO and St. Gregory’s.”

The Rams will return to action on Friday, when they travel to Chickasha, OK, to take on the University of Science & Arts (OK).  That game is scheduled for a 3:00 p.m. start.
