LUBBOCK, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University volleyball team (2-5) split a pair of matches to begin play at Lubbock Christian University’s Lady Chap Classic on Friday. The Lady Rams topped Concordia University Nebraska (1-5) 3-0 before falling 3-0 to 15th ranked Lubbock Christian (5-2).
Against Concordia, both teams started out hot. Texas Wesleyan outhit Concordia .419-.364 and took a 25-21 win in game one. After taking game two 25-19, the Rams made just one error in game three and cruised to a 25-10 win.
Brittney Person led the way with 12 kills while hitting .480. Destiny Clemmons (11 kills, .368), Devin Warren (10 kills, .450) and Kristen Venhuizen (8 kills, .375) also hit the ball well. Evoni Darling posted 37 assists to go with eight digs. Kristina Harris finished with 17 digs.
Against Lubbock Christian, errors proved to be the Lady Rams’ undoing. Texas Wesleyan made 15 attack errors compared to just nine for LCU, while the Chaps outhit the Lady Rams .374-.106.
Lubbock Christian took the match in three games, 25-17, 25-19, and 25-15.
Venhuizen led the Lady Rams with six kills. Daring finished with 20 assists, and Harris posted nine digs.
“We played as a team against Concordia,” commented head coach Christy Clawson. “We came together and made plays when we needed them. Against Lubbock we just made too many errors to stay with a good efficient team like that.”
The Lady Rams will continue play in the Lady Chap Classic on Saturday. They will take on Howard Payne University at 1:00 p.m. in Lubbock, before traveling to nearby Plainview to take on Wayland Baptist University at 4:00 p.m. |
