PLAINVIEW, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University volleyball team (3-6) split a pair of matches in the Lubbock Christian University Lady Chap Classic on Saturday to finish 2-2 in the tournament. The Lady Rams started the day with a 3-0 win over Howard Payne University (2-4) in Lubbock, TX, before moving to nearby Plainview where they were defeated 3-0 by Wayland Baptist University (7-0).
Against the Yellow Jackets, the Lady Rams took control of game one with a 6-2 run that brought the score to 18-11 and went on to a 25-15 win. The Lady Rams trailed 18-16 in game two, before rattling off six straight points. They then closed out the game 25-20. Texas Wesleyan trailed 17-13 in game three before their hitters got hot. Kristen Venhuizen, Kaitlyn Lowes, and Destiny Clemmons combined on six kills during a 10-1 run. Texas Wesleyan then cruised to a match-clinching 25-21 win.
Venhuizen finished with a match-high 10 kills to go with 10 digs. Evoni Darling also posted a double-double with 34 assists and 11 digs. Clemmons and Devin Warren each had eight kills. Kristina Harris finished with 16 digs.
Against Wayland Baptist, the Pioneers won with scores of 25-15, 25-21, and 25-14.
Clemmons led the lady Rams with eight kills. Venhuizen finished with seven kills and 12 digs. Harris posted 18 digs, while Darling notched 14 assists.
“Coming away 2-2 this weekend was not bad,” commented head coach Christy Clawson, “but, had we cut down on our errors, it could have been 4-0. We are staying with good teams for the first 15 points, but we are making too many errors, and we need to be better terminating the ball.”
The Lady Rams will make their home debut on Tuesday, when they host Southern Nazarene University. That match is scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. start in the Sid Richardson Center. |
