ABILENE, TX: Coming off an NAIA National Runner-up finish a year ago, the Texas Wesleyan University men’s golf team opened its season on Monday. After one round at Abilene Christian University’s Charles Coody West Texas Intercollegiate at Diamondback Golf Course, the Rams are tied for 5th place.
After a 90 minute rain delay this morning, the Rams, ranked 6th in the Golf World/Nike Preseason Coaches’ Poll, fired a first round of 292 and are tied with Dallas Baptist University and St. Mary’s University. That trio is just eight strokes off the pace set by Midwestern State University which shot 284 for the round.
Southeastern Oklahoma State University’s Corey Gilbert and Midwestern State’s A.J. Pursley turned in the low round of the day amongst 78 individuals at three-under par (68).
Senior Drew Koonce led the Rams with a round of even par (71) to sit in a tie for 13th position. Juniors Stuart Martin and Armando Villarreal are both tied for 18th at 72. Sophomore Tyler Lackey rounded out Texas Wesleyan’s card with a score of 77. Freshman Frazer Ogston shot 79 for the day.
The Rams will complete play at Diamondback Golf Course in Tuesday’s final round.
