RAMS PUSH NEWMAN TO PLAYOFF

ABILENE, TX:  After starting the day in a tie for 5th, the Texas Wesleyan University men’s golf team took Newman University to a playoff at Abilene Christian’s Charles Coody West Texas Intercollegiate on Tuesday.

 

The 6th ranked Rams posted the 5th best single round in program history at 278 in Tuesday’s final round.  Newman fired a 281 and the two teams found themselves tied at 570 for the tournament.

 

Newman then prevailed on the second hole of the ensuing playoff.  The Rams total of 570 matched the 7th lowest through 36 holes in program history.

 

Senior Drew Koonce led the charge with a four-under par 67 to take a share of the individual lead at 138.  Abilene Christian’s Adam Carpenter, a freshman playing his first collegiate event, won medalist honors in the field of 78 individuals, breaking a three-way tie on the fourth playoff hole.

 

Armando Villarreal shot 69 on Tuesday to finish tied for 10th at 141.  Stuart Martin shot 70 to finish tied for 12th at 142.  Tyler Lackey (74) and Frazer Ogston (72) tied for 53rd at 151 for the tournament.

 

“The guys did very well,” commented head coach Bobby Cornett.  “We did some good things and had chances to win in the playoff.”

 

Texas Wesleyan will host the annual O.D. Bounds Golf Classic at Diamond Oaks Golf Club in Fort Worth, TX, on Monday.  They will return to intercollegiate action on September 28-29 in the Rattler Invitational at Pecan Valley Golf Club in San Antonio, TX.
