FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University volleyball team (4-6) defeated Southern Nazarene University (8-4) in five games (16-25, 25-23, 25-19, 23-25, 15-12) at the Sid Richardson Center on Tuesday night.
Despite a rowdy crowd in the Lady Rams’ home opener, Southern Nazarene came out swinging, taking game one 25-16.
The Crimson Storm had five team blocks in game one, Leslie Riepl assisting with four of those.
In game two, the Lady Rams jumped out to a 7-2 lead with a service ace from Destiny Clemons and a kill by Kristen Venhuizen giving the Rams an 11-4 lead. Southern Nazarene fought back with a kill from Morgan Loewen to come within four (24-20), but a kill by Chelsy Covington gave the Lady Rams a 25-23 game two win.
The Lady Rams took a 25-19 game three win, led by a white hot Clemons who tallied six kills, and a block assist.
The Lady Rams jumped out to a 10-1 lead in game four, but some costly errors by the Lady Rams and timely defense from Southern Nazarene that included four team blocks giving the Crimson Storm a 25-23 win to even the match at two games each.
In game five, Clemons continued to dominate, scoring the last three points to lead the Lady Rams to a 15-12 win to take the match.
Clemons posted career-highs with 23 kills and six block assists. Angelica Arroyo tallied 35 assists, and Evoni Darling finished with 24 assists. Covington had a double double with 11 kills and 15 digs, while Venhuizen also picked up a double double with 10 kills and 16 digs.
The Lady Rams will host the Wesleyan-Hughes Volleyball Classic on Friday and Saturday, September 18 and 19. The Lady Rams play John Brown University at 1:00 p.m. and College of the Ozarks at 3:00 p.m. on Friday. |
