FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University volleyball team (5-9) defeated Belhaven (8-8) in three sets (25-19, 25-22, 25-17), before taking a loss to Oklahoma Baptists 3-1 (25-21, 25-15, 18-25, 25-20) in the Wesleyan Hughes Classic on Saturday.
In the game against Belhaven, the Lady Rams took control and, despite the Lady Blazers best efforts, the Lady Rams power proved to be too much for Belhaven. The Lady Blazers came within one point of the Lady Rams in game two with a kill by Christina Atwood that made it a 23-22 game, but the Lady Rams shut the door. A kill from Kristen Venhuisen assisted by Evoni Darling lifted the Rams to a two set advantage. Wesleyan went on to take the third set and the match.
Destiny Clemons led the Lady Rams with 12 kills and five blocks. Angelica Arroyo finished with 25 assists in the match, and Brittany person added 10 kills, four blocks, and five digs in the win.
In the match against Oklahoma Baptist, the Lady Rams battled the Lady Bison for the lead throughout. The Lady Bison took a close first set 25-21, then carried that momentum to win the second set 25-15. The Lady Rams rallied to take the third set. Devin Warren and Destiny Clemons each had four kills and the Lady Rams never trailed, taking the game 25-18. Wesleyan could not complete the comeback however, and the Lady Bison took the fourth set 25-20 and the match 3-1.
Destiny Clemons led the Lady Rams once again with 15 kills and five blocks. Devin Warren had nine kills and three blocks in the match. Angelica Arroyo picked up 25 assists, and Evoni Darling added 14 assists.
In other day two action, Belhaven (8-8) squeaked out a win against Mary-Hardin Baylor (3-2) in five games (25-20, 25-12, 25-27, 22-25, 15-13). College of the Ozarks (12-6) took a three game match (25-22, 25-19, 25-23) from John Brown (12-2) before losing to Oklahoma Baptist in five sets (15-25, 35-33, 24-26, 25-21, 15-11). John Brown went on to win their second contest of the day against Mary-Hardin Baylor three games to none (25-23, 25-8, 25-13).
The Lady Rams open conference play Friday, September 25, against Wiley College at 7:00 p.m. in the Sid Richardson Center on the Historic Texas Wesleyan University Campus. |
