SILOAM SPRINGS, AR: The Texas Wesleyan University men’s soccer team (7-2) suffered a 3-0 loss in their final non-conference tune-up at John Brown University (6-3) on Saturday.
The Golden Eagles stunned the Rams with three early goals. Sasha Viatrov hit Juan Iraola for a goal in the 12th minute and the two hooked up again for a second goal in the 20th minute. In the 29th minute Gabriel Duarte scored off an assist from Justin Thompson to bring the score to 3-0.
The deficit proved to be too much to overcome as the Rams only manage two shots on goal which were both handled by JBU goalkeeper Ryan Helmer.
After the rough start, the Rams settled down and played well. Toby Rochau and Joakim Soderbaum combined to hold JBU scoreless over the final 61 minutes. Soderbaum made five saves while working a scoreless second half.
Head coach Josh Gibbs held himself accountable for the lackluster performance. “We just didn’t have the players as prepared as they needed to be for this John Brown team,” Gibbs commented. “We will be prepared for our conference games next week.”
The Rams will regroup and get set for their conference opener next week. Texas Wesleyan will travel to Muskogee, OK, on Thursday, where they will take on Bacone University. That contest is scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. start. |
