LADY RAMS SWEEP A PAIR
October 3, 2009

Box Score - vs. Bacone

Box Score - vs. St. Thomas

FORT WORTH, TX:  The Texas Wesleyan University Volleyball team (9-11, 3-2 RRAC) won a pair of matches at the Sid Richardson Center on Saturday.  They Lady Rams took a 3-1 Red River Athletic Conference win over Bacone (1-12, 0-4) before winning a thrilling five-set match over the University of St. Thomas (10-5).

The Lady Rams struggled through a slow start against Bacone.  The Warriors jumped ahead 10-3 in game one and then held on for a 25-23 win.  Game two was tied at 13, but the Lady Rams took control with a 7-2 run and went on to win 25-20.  Things started to click for Texas Wesleyan in game three as they ran out to a 25-13 win.  In game four, the Lady Rams held a narrow 18-17 lead, but went on to finish the match with a 25-22 win.

Kaitlyn Lowes led the lady Rams with 12 kills while hitting .320.  Destiny Clemmons added 11 kills, and Devin Warren finished with 10 kills and a .409 hitting percentage.  Angelica Arroyo posted 32 assists, and Chelsy Covington notched 12 digs in the win.

The Lady Rams showed signs of brilliance in a hotly contested match with St. Thomas.  The Lady Rams rallied from a 13-9 deficit to lead game one 23-21.  However, St. Thomas scored four straight points to take the game 25-23.

The Rams controlled games two and won 25-18.  Chelsy Covington caught fire for Texas Wesleyan in game three.  Covington threw down eight kills in the game and the Rams rolled to a 25-17 win.  Game three saw its third tied at 18 before St. Thomas used a 5-1 run to gain control and take a 25-21 win.

That set up a thrilling game five that rolled through ten ties and three lead changes.  The Lady Rams fought off a pair of match points before gaining their first match point at 16-15.  The Celts then fought off two match points before the Lady Rams closed the match at 19-17.

Brittney Person led all hitters with 15 kills.  Covington (13 kills, 12 digs) and Destiny Clemons (10 kills, 15 digs) both finished with double-doubles.  Covington’s 13 kills were a career-high.  Arroyo notched 33 assists in the win.

“I’m very proud of these ladies,” said head coach Christy Clawson.  “We finally finished well.  You could see the difference in the energy on the court.  They were not going to let someone beat them on their own court today.  Hopefully we can use the St. Thomas match to turn a corner and have that energy consistently.”

The Lady Rams will begin a 3-game road swing at Our Lady of the Lake University in San Antonio, TX, on Thursday.  That match is scheduled for a 6:00 p.m. start.
