FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University women’s soccer team (9-4, 3-1 RRAC) suffered a 3-1 loss at the hands of UT-Brownsville (5-3-1, 2-0-1) at Martin Field on Saturday.
The Lady Rams claimed a 1-0 lead in the 20th minute after goalkeeper Stephanie Reid fouled Vanessa Lopez in the box. Senior Danielle Parks converted the ensuing penalty kick to give Texas Wesleyan a one goal lead.
The lead nearly stood up. However, in the 83rd minute UTB’s Verena Wonsikowski collected a rebound off of a Katy Houchin save and scored the equalizer. Five minutes later, UTB played a free kick to the far left post. A Scorpion and Lady Ram player got tangled up on the play and a foul was called against Texas Wesleyan. Jodie Hunter converted the penalty kick for UTB and the Scorpions claimed a 2-1 victory.
The Scorpions outshot the Rams 19-8 while Texas Wesleyan led 4-3 in corner kicks. Houchin made eight saves for Texas Wesleyan. Reid made five stops for UTB.
“We put ourselves in a position to be hurt by that penalty kick,” commented head coach Josh Gibbs. “We have to be more dangerous if we want to compete for a conference title.”
The Lady Rams will continue in RRAC action on Thursday, when they travel to nearby Cedar Hill, TX, to take on Northwood University (4-4, 2-0). That game is scheduled for a 3:00 p.m. start.
