LADY RAMS WIN CLOSE SHOOTOUT
October 15, 2009

FORT WORTH, TX: In front of a collage of pink in honor of breast cancer awareness and research month, the Texas Wesleyan University volleyball team (11-13, 5-4 RRAC) won a close five set match (24-26, 25-18, 20-25, 25-21, 16-14) against Southwestern Assemblies of God University (18-4, 6-3 RRAC) Thursday night.

The Lady Rams and Lady Lions battled back and forth the entire match as each team volleyed for momentum. There were eight tie scores and five lead changes in the first set alone. Late in the first set with the score tied at 24, a kill by SAGU’s Rachel Brown and a Lady Ram attacking error gave the Lady Lions a 1-0 lead.

The Lady Rams tightened up the defense and unleashed the offense with Chelsy Covington and Brittney Person leading the way, as each tallied four kills to even the match up a 1-1 with a 25-18 second set win.

The Lady Lions fought back and took a 25-20 third set as Caitlyn Hudson was the difference taking seven kills in game three.

The Lady Rams evened the match at 2-2 with a 25-21 fourth set led by Angelica Arroyo who fed Destiny Clemons and Person the ball for a combined 13 kills.

In the fifth game, with the crowd pumped, and with the Lady Rams trailing 14-13 Clemons kept the match alive with her 22nd kill of the match. It was Clemons again with a kill in the next play to give the Lady Rams a 15-14 lead and put the Lady Lions on the ropes. In dramatic fashion, Clemons lifted the Lady Rams to victory with her third consecutive kill, a kill that also gave her a career high 24 kills.

Evoni Darling finished with 20 assists, while Arroyo tallied 36 assists. Lauren Hinojos led the Lady Rams with 16 digs. Person smashed 13 kills, and Clemons led all players with 26 kills.

The Lady Rams hit the road on their way to Muskogee, OK, to take on conference opponent Bacone College at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 24, and then travel to Siloam Springs, AR, the same day to battle John Brown University at 3:00 p.m.
