HOBBS, NM: The Texas Wesleyan University men’s soccer team (10-6, 2-4 RRAC) took a 3-2 win in the first overtime period against the University of the Southwest (6-10, 0-6) on Saturday.
The Mustangs got on the board first when Javier Perez found the net in the 26th minute. However, Leo Cubrilo scored off an assist from Tyler Keith in the 40th minute to send the teams to the half deadlocked at one.
Rafael Franco converted a penalty kick in the 55th minute to give Texas Wesleyan a 2-1 advantage. The Mustangs tied the game in the 75th minute on a penalty kick from Angel Hernandez.
That set up a dramatic finish at the close of the first overtime period. Theo Nabassi netted his eight goal of the season in the 98th minute to deliver the 3-2 win.
“This was a good win,” commented head coach Josh Gibbs. “We had to have it and the guys got it done.” The win kept the Rams a half game ahead of Bacone College for the final RRAC Tournament bid.
At ten wins, the team has posted its highest total since 2005, a season in which they won the RRAC title and finished at 11-7 overall. They are currently three wins shy of matching the program’s highest total (13-7-1 in 1993).
The Rams will return to Martin Field on Thursday, when they host Southwestern Assemblies of God University on Think Pink Day. That game is scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. start. |
