LADY RAMS HAMMER LIONS:

GIBBS TIES RECORD
October 29, 2009

FORT WORTH, TX:  The Texas Wesleyan University women’s soccer team (12-5, 5-2) took a 10-0 win over Southwestern Assemblies of God University (4-10-1, 1-6) at Martin Field on Thursday.  The game marked the 40th career win for head coach Josh Gibbs, tying the school record.

As part of Breast Cancer Awareness month, the Lady Rams wore pink patches on their jerseys and played with a pink ball.  Prior to the game, Gibbs presented Dr. Elizabeth Alexander with a pink game ball.   Alexander, a professor of History at Texas Wesleyan, is a breast cancer survivor, who has been cancer free since 2001.  She has been involved with the Susan G. Komen Foundation since 1997, three years before she was diagnosed with lymphatic cancer.

The Lady Rams made the most of the occasion, scoring early and often.  Kayla Doherty got the scoring started in the 10th minute with her first of two goals on the day.  Jamie Romaguera scored her 12th and 13th goals of the season in the 12th and 20th minutes.  Texas Wesleyan added goand als from Lateah Lucero, Christina Zimmerman, and Vanessa Lopez to take a 6-0 lead at the half.

Doherty scored her second goal in the 52nd minute.  Cara Lumpkin and Jordan Carrizales added goals in the 55th and 61st minutes.  Zimmerman then capped the scoring with her second goal of the day in the 66th minute.

The Lady Rams outshot the Lady Lions 35-4 while scoring on 10 of 21 shots on goal.  Katy Houchin needed just one save to complete her school-record eighth shutout of the season.  With eight shutouts the team also matched the school record set last season.

Erin Bethany added a pair of assists to the offensive outburst, while Lucero, Jacqueline Wittman, Jessica Watton, and Samantha Greer each had assists as well.

The Lady Rams will wrap up the regular season on Saturday, when they host Huston-Tillotson University at 7:30 p.m.  A win or a tie in that contest will secure the 3rd seed in next week’s RRAC Tournament which the Lady Rams will be hosting.
