FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University men’s soccer team (11-7, 3-5 RRAC) suffered a 1-0 loss at the hands of Huston-Tillotson University (10-5-1, 7-1) in Red River Athletic Conference action on Saturday.
The Rams celebrated nine seniors prior to their final regular season contest. Toby Rochau, Kevin Rauch, Leo Cubrilo, Theo Nabassi, Adis Druzanovic, John Kuethe, Jorge Pineda, Jeff Mullin, and Ekene Onuoha have all made outstanding contributions to the Texas Wesleyan Soccer Program. During their tenure, the team has won 52 games and claimed one RRAC Championship.
The two teams battled through a very even, scoreless first half. Huston-Tillotson outshot Texas Wesleyan 8-6 in the period and led 2-1 in corner kicks.
Although HTU created more opportunities in the second half (HTU outshot the Rams 12-5 in the second half), the game appeared destined for overtime until Cesar Silva found the net off an assist from Giovanni Sanchez in the 87th minute.
Rochau (6-6) made 10 saves in the loss, while his counterpart, Aldo Rodriguez needed just one stop to preserve the shutout.
“It is a tough loss,” said head coach Josh Gibbs. “We lacked that little bit of grit that we needed to beat a Tillotson team that is that good. But, we are starting to play a lot better, and we will need to keep that up against Our Lady of the Lake on Thursday.”
By virtue of a Bacone College loss on Saturday, the Rams claimed the sixth seed in next week’s RRAC Tournament which they will host at Martin Field. Texas Wesleyan will play third seeded Our Lady of the Lake University at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday. |
