FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University women’s soccer team (13-5, 6-2 RRAC) closed out the regular season with a 10-1 win over Huston-Tillotson University (1-13-1, 0-7-1) at Martin Field on Saturday night.
The win marked the 41st career victory for head coach Josh Gibbs, setting a new Texas Wesleyan record. “It is a little humbling to have this happen so fast,” Gibbs commented, “I have to thank every player that I’ve had and also my staff, these are their wins. I also want to thank Gilbert Richardson and Steve Jones for starting a quality program and keeping it going. It is an honor to have my name alongside coaches of their caliber.”
Gibbs is in his fourth season at Texas Wesleyan. He has already won two RRAC Championships and received two RRAC Coach of the Year Awards. He surpassed the previous record of 40 held by Jones who coached from 2002-05.
Saturday’s game was also Senior Night, marking the final regular season home game for four outstanding seniors. Kelsey Lynd, Jaimie Romaguera, Alejandra Barrera, and Danielle Parks have led the Rams to 54 wins, a 26-6-1 RRAC record, and three RRAC Championships during their tenure.
Fittingly, the seniors got the scoring started. Romaguera scored just 1:01 into the contest. Barrera added a goal in the third minute. Brandi Berrier scored in the fourth minute as the Lady Rams scored on each of their first three shots.
A second goal from Romaguera and strikes from Jacqueline Wittman, Jordan Carrizales, and Jodi Blowers made it 7-0 at halftime. Jessica Watton added goals in the 66th and 74th minutes. Barrera made it 10-0 with her second goal of the day in the 81st minute before HTU’s Isela Guzman scored in the 84th minute to cap the scoring at 10-1.
Romaguera and Barrera each posted two goals and an assist in the game. Berrier finished with a goal and two assists.
The Lady Rams outshot HTU 43-5 while taking 24 shots on goal. The Lady Rams also set a new school record for goals scored in a season during Saturday’s game. That mark now stands at 74, surpassing the previous mark of 64 set in 2005.
“It was a good night all the way around,” Gibbs said. “The girls did a good job honoring the seniors. Now we are looking forward to defending our conference title.”
The Lady Rams will be the third seed in next week’s RRAC Tournament which will be held at Martin Field, November 5-7. They will play the sixth seed (either Texas College or Bacone College) at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday. |
