RECORD SETTING SEASON COMES TO AN END
November 6, 2009

FORT WORTH, TX:  The Texas Wesleyan University women’s soccer team (14-6) suffered a 4-2 loss to second seeded UT-Brownsville (10-4-2) in Red River Athletic Conference semifinal action at Martin field Friday night.

The loss ended what was a record setting season for the Lady Rams.  The 2009 Lady Rams got off to the best start in program history at 5-0 and were ranked as high as 21st nationally.  At 14-6 overall they matched the program’s highest win total.  In just his fourth season, head coach Josh Gibbs also set a new record for career coaching victories, a mark that now stands at 42.

The Lady Rams scored 80 goals this season, blasting the previous record of 64 set in 2005.  The team also set records with 206 points on the season, a 1.25 goals against average, nine shutouts, 20 goals in a game, and 50 points in a game.  Senior Alejandra Barrera matched the school record for points in a game with 12 on five goals and two assists in a 20-0 win over Southwestern Adventist.  Katy Houchin set single season goalkeeping records with nine saves and 14 wins.

Friday’s semifinal started well.  Senior captain Jaimie Romaguera blasted a free kick from 25 yards out that went off the post and in for the game’s first goal in the 12th minute.

That proved to be the only goal of the period, but UTB exploded for four goals in the second period.  Freshman Cara Lumpkin scored in the 85th minute to bring the score to 4-2, but it was too late to complete a comeback.

With the win, UT-Brownsville advanced to Saturday’s championship game.  They will face fourth seeded Our Lady of the Lake University who defeated top seeded Northwood 2-1 on Friday.  Saturday’s championship will be played at Martin Field at 7:00 p.m.
