Despite teaching an overload regularly and serving as the Department Chair, Dr. C consistently earns the highest student evaluation ratings. She uses the SMART board in her courses, which allow her to stream video demonstrations and/or animations of cellular processes. Likewise, she uses the SMART Notebook technology to augment her Power Point presentations. Dr. C conducts additional pretest and posttest assessment in her courses to improve instruction and meet student needs better. Taken together, Dr. C makes per teaching her professional priority and our students benefit from her dedication, work ethic, and willingness to embrace change so to prepare them for their next step, albeit the workforce or graduate school.

Dr. Brenda Taylor Matthews, Professor of History, School of Arts and Sciences

Dr. Matthews contributes her time and talents in countless ways to Wesleyan and the larger Fort Worth community.  This year, Dr. Matthews serves as Chair of the Department of Social Sciences, served on three faculty search committees, chaired a tenure committee, served as AAUP Vice President, and was an active participant on four standing committees as well as the ad hoc committee for Faculty Handbook revisions. Active in the greater community, Dr. Matthews is an active member in Phi Alpha Theta, a Charter Member of the North Texas Fulbright Chapter, and a member of the Tarrant County Historical Society. Passionate about the preservation of historical landmarks, Dr. Matthews spearheaded the outreach initiative to clean up and refurbish the Polytechnic Cemetery, which resides on the Wesleyan campus. Because of these efforts, Ms. Mae Bruce, a descendant, had the project submitted for historical marking and the project was featured in articles in the Rambler as well as the Star Telegram. Dr. Matthews recently received word that Poly Tech Cemetery will receive a historical marking and designation, making it the 1000th Historic Cemetery in Texas. As faculty, we strive to not only teach our students the knowledge and skills of their chosen profession, but to demonstrate social awareness and responsible citizenship. To that end, Dr. Matthews is their outstanding role model.
