FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

STORIES OF FORT WORTH WOMEN AT THE 2009 GOOSTREE SYMPOSIUM

Explore the lives and careers of Fort Worth women, from pioneers to the movers and shakers of the mid-twentieth century, at this year’s Faye C. Goostree Symposium. The annual symposium will begin at 12:15 p.m. Tuesday, March 24, at Texas Wesleyan University.

The keynote presentation, which is free and open to the public, will feature the authors of the book Grace & Gumption: Stories of Fort Worth Women in re-enactments, discussions, and readings that reveal just how Fort Worth has been shaped by its feminine side. After the presentation, the authors will sign copies of Grace & Gumption (TCU Press). The book will also be available for purchase.

Grace & Gumption editor Katie Sherrod and authors Jan Jones, Hollace Ava Weiner, Sherrie McLeRoy, Susan Petty, Ruth Karbach, and Brenda Taylor Matthews will focus on Fort Worth women such as Edna Gladney, the nuns of Our Lady of Victory, Flora Reeder, who was a part of the Fort Worth Circle Artists, and Stuttering Sam (aka Mary Dowell of Casa Mañana).

A luncheon will follow at 1:30 p.m. Reservations are required for the luncheon. The price is $18 for general admission, $15 for Texas Wesleyan faculty and staff, or $10 for students. RSVP by Friday, March 13, to Micki Davis at mmdavis@txwes.edu or (817) 531-4404.

The keynote presentation will be in Martin Hall, located in the Ann Waggoner Fine Arts Building, 1309 Wesleyan Street. The luncheon will be in the Louella Baker Martin Pavilion, 1112 Wesleyan Street, Fort Worth.

The Goostree Symposium at Texas Wesleyan University, founded in 1981 by Fort Worth civic and church leader Faye C. Goostree, increases awareness of women’s issues and recognizes the professional and academic achievements of women.
