2009 PRESIDENT’S HONORS CONCERT SHOWCASES UNIVERSITY’S TOP MUSICAL TALENTS Texas Wesleyan University’s highest-achieving music students will share their vocal and instrumental talents during the President’s Honors Concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 6, in Martin Hall on the Texas Wesleyan campus. This evening of extraordinary talent is free and open to the public.
This year's array of performers displays a high percentage of voice and piano students. The roster includes six singers – three are tenors – along with three pianists and a guitarist. All were selected by a three-person independent panel of judges.
Eight of this year's ten performers are taken from the department's Attainment (junior/senior) Division. In addition, one sophomore and one freshman made the cut. Freshman soprano and Holy Rosary Catholic School graduate Melissa Pierce, will sing Richard Pearson Thomas’s setting of Emily Dickinson’s 1890 poem “I Never Saw a Moor.” Repertory for the remaining singers will include Mozart’s aria “Non so più cosa son” from The Marriage of Figaro, sung by junior Caitlin Fanning, and Bizet’s Guitare, sung by sophomore David Gast. Third-generation Wesleyan student and the grandson of the late J.D. “Dick” Livingstone ’39, tenor Nevin Nichols will perform Donizetti’s “Una furtiva lagrima” from L'elisir d'amore. Programming with an unusual flair will include Ryan Amador’s performance of Anthem from the Tim Rice/ABBA musical collaboration entitled Chess, as well as a Stardust-Begin the Beguine medley sung by graduating senior Jeremy Smith. Junior guitarist Mackenzie Probst will present Torija by Federico Moreno Torroba. Pianists Karen Garcia, April Wilson and Mary-Margaret Meyer will round out the program with challenging repertory ranging from Mozart to Benjamin Lees to Alberto Ginastera.
The event is hosted by University President Dr. Harold and Mrs. Marie Jeffcoat along with Mr. Charles Duke '53 and Mr. Joe Don Conger. Ms. Anne Skipper, '78, Chairman of the Wesleyan Board of Trustees, will serve as Mistress of Ceremonies. A reception will follow in the newly dedicated Maxine and Edward L. Baker Building, on the corner of Wesleyan and Rosedale.
The President's Honors Concert, established in 1996, is now in its 13th iteration. The event has migrated from its original venue in the Texas Boys Choir building, to the Scott Theatre in the old Modern Art Museum, to its current home in Martin Hall, where it has been since 2003. Valet parking is available. Business attire preferred. To RSVP for the event, call 817-531-4404. Martin Hall is located at 1309 Wesleyan St., Fort Worth. Click here for a map.
