TARRANT COUNTY COMMISSIONER ROY C. BROOKS TO GIVE COMMENCEMENT ADDRESS
Brooks has had a long career in public affairs. He served for 14 years as Precinct Administrator for Tarrant County, Precinct One. Additionally, he served three terms (six years) on the City Council for the city of Forest Hill, during which time he served as Mayor Pro Tem for four years. As Commissioner of Precinct One, which includes Texas Wesleyan’s neighborhood, Brooks has been integrally involved in the redevelopment of the Polytechnic/Riverside neighborhoods. He included the reconstruction of East Rosedale Street in the 2006 Tarrant County Transportation Bond Program and has continued to support it as needed with $3.3 million from his Precinct’s discretionary road fund. Brooks’ involvement with Texas Wesleyan extends beyond his role as Commissioner. As a member of the Texas Wesleyan Board of Trustees, he serves on the Audit and Finance Committee and the Academic Affairs Committee. He has been instrumental in establishing a partnership between the C5 Youth Foundation and Texas Wesleyan. Each summer for two years, Texas Wesleyan has hosted the week-long C5 Medallion Experience, part of the Foundation’s mission to inspire youth from risk-filled environments to achieve their full potential, contribute to the improvement of their communities and become role models for others. Brooks, an honorary alumnus of Texas Wesleyan, also supports student activities at Texas Wesleyan. He is a frequent speaker at campus activities and even invited Texas Wesleyan’s 2006 National Championship basketball team to Commissioners’ Court to receive a proclamation and medals. He is on the board of several local and national organizations, including the National Association of Counties, Community Hospice of North Texas, Leadership Fort Worth, Tarrant County United Negro College Fund Campaign, Infant Mortality Steering Committee, and C5 Texas Youth Foundation (formerly Camp Coca-Cola Texas). He is also a member of the Boards of Directors of several Tax Increment Financing Districts charged with financing significant economic development projects in Tarrant County. He is past president of several organizations, including the National Association of Black County Officials and the Fort Worth/Tarrant County Minority Leaders and Citizens Council. As President, he led the MLCC in spearheading the African American Immunization Coalition and the African American AIDS Summit. His wife, Dr. Jennifer Giddings Brooks, is director of the Center for Urban Education at Texas Christian University. They have two children, Royce and Marion. Commencement activities: Robing, 11 a.m., Polytechnic United Methodist Church,1310 S. Collard St., Fort Worth. Graduation, 7 p.m., Fort Worth Convention Center, 1201 Houston St., Fort Worth. Note: The graduation ceremony will be in the Convention Center Ballroom, located on the second floor. Please be advised that there is another graduation taking place in the convention center arena that evening, so attendees are encouraged to arrive early to allow enough time for parking.
