Theatre Wesleyan Presents La Ronde

Publicity photo from La RondeSet in early 20th century Vienna, La Ronde is a provocative piece dealing with sex and the social classes. Written by Arthur Schnitzler, an Austrian playwright who was a contemporary of Sigmund Freud and adapted by John Barton for the Royal Shakespeare Company, La Ronde concerns 10 characters who are all connected through a series of rendezvous, some scandalous. The characters, five men and five women, are from various walks of life, such as the military, domestic service and the bourgeoisie. Characters enchant, cajole, exploit and maneuver one another in a series of surprising encounters.

La Ronde runs from Thursday, Oct. 8, through Sunday, Oct. 11, in the Thad Smotherman Theatre, located in the Law Sone Fine Arts Center at 1205 Binkley St. Thursday through Saturday performances are at 7:30 p.m. with one matinee at 2 p.m. Sunday, October 11.

La Ronde is directed by Jeanne Everton, associate professor of theatre, assisted by Johnny Gonzales, senior theatre major. The show features the onstage talents of Wesleyan theatre majors Sarahi Salazar, Tommy Fogle, Gloria Mendoza, Jovan Rodriguez, Joy Millard, Jeremy Jackson, Jordana Abrenica, Chase Burnett, Suzanne Fordering and Christopher Hatcher. Nick Mims and Charles Fain serve as the stage management team.

Tickets are $8 for general admission, $6 for all Wesleyan faculty and staff, $4 for all students with ID and seniors 65 and up. The box office is open from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. Tuesdays-Fridays the week of production and one hour before curtain on show days. For reservations, please contact the box office at (817) 531-4211.  Due to subject matter, La Ronde is recommended for mature audiences.

Take a peek behind closed doors and experience the class ideology of 1900s Vienna. La Ronde is a rousing experience, reminding us that no matter our status, we all share something in common.

Student Life Needs Your Help!

Student Life collects Organization Registration Forms every semester, and there are many organizations who have never turned in this information…ever!

If you are involved with any organizations that Texas Wesleyan students are a part of, please help get the students to turn in a registration form. The form and instructions can be found at: http://www.txwes.edu/studentlife/studentorganizations.htm. Student Life is also trying to compile as much information about Wesleyan's organizations as possible, so they would also like to get a copy of all constitutions and bylaws of our currently active organizations. Thank you for helping us build communication with our campus organizations. If you have any questions, please contact Michael Chaney, coordinator of student activities, volunteerism, and organization director, at 817-531-4870.

Wesleyan Plays a Stellar Role in 9/11 Commemorative Concert

Wesleyan students, faculty, and alumnae had a major role in the presentation of this year’s “September Song” concert on Friday, Sept. 11, sponsored by Fort Worth Sister Cities International in commemoration of the events of 9/11/01. Alumnae Jean Frick and Pat Wooley, BMEd ’59; co-chairs of the Music Committee, stated, “Without our Texas Wesleyan resources, this concert would not have happened!”

Wooley tells The Flame more about the event: "The program presented music representing Fort Worth’s seven sister cities, and was climaxed by the world premiere of Cantus Septembri, a choral work especially commissioned for the concert last year, but held over to this year in order to give it adequate preparation." The anthem for chorus, piano, trumpet, flute, and percussion was composed by Samuel Douglas, professor of music theory and composition at the University. of South Carolina, using lyrics written by Wooley.

"Jerome M. Bierschenk, director of choral studies at Texas Wesleyan, prepared the Wesleyan Singers to perform the work in cooperation with the Texas Christian University Concert Chorale, and also played trumpet for the performance. Jessica Koebbe, adjunct instructor, and Lori Dunn provided accompaniment on the two concert grand pianos, and Maria Harman, adjunct instructor, played the flute accompaniment. A TCU percussionist, Michael Dooley, performed on tympani and various other percussive instruments, and Ronald Shirey of the TCU faculty conducted the premiere. The audience was warmly appreciative of the outstanding performance of this moving work.

"To conclude the concert, Bierschenk also conducted the singing of “Let There Be Peace On Earth” by the combined choirs and audience, accompanied by a two-piano arrangement prepared by Koebbe. Sister Cities sends a grateful salute to our Texas Wesleyan colleagues for their outstanding contribution to this important cultural event."
