Automated Emergency Communications for Texas Wesleyan University Community

WEMS logoThe implementation of the new Wesleyan Emergency Management System (WEMS) will provide accurate and timely information to the historic campus, law school and Burleson site during crisis situations, utilizing the latest in emergency notification technology. In the case of severe weather or a campus crisis, the University will utilize WEMS to alert students, faculty and staff of the nature of the emergency and of any steps the recipient should take to safeguard his or her personal welfare.

Each student, faculty and staff member should report – and update as necessary – current local and home emergency contact numbers where Texas Wesleyan can most effectively provide the person time-sensitive emergency information; usually this will be a mobile phone or other handheld electronic device. All information submitted is confidential and secure. Use of this emergency contact information will be used for only the most urgent campus emergencies.

To begin, all are encouraged to log on to the WEMS web site to provide contact information. After registration, emergency information will be rapidly delivered to your phone or other handheld device if an emergency event is in progress or imminent. Depending on your individual communication plans, you may be charged for each WEMS notification.

Mathis Presents at National College Learning Center Annual Conference

Photo of Glynn MathisGlynn Mathis, director of the Academic Resource Center (ARC), gave a presentation at the National College Learning Center's annual conference. The theme of this year's conference, held in Memphis, was "The Rhythm and Blues of Research and Practice." Mathis' presentation, "A Different Rhythm to Overcome Academic Blues," focused on how some students "have the blues" and dance out of rhythm all over campus trying to find the help they need. The multi-functional approach of centers like Texas Wesleyan's ARC - one location, four different services - gives a new rhythm and does away with the "blues" by meeting

the needs of students all at one location. Mathis pointed out in his presentation that most learning centers are tutoring-oriented, but Wesleyan's ARC offers tutoring, advising, placement testing/orientation, and career services.

Alumna Publishes Op/Ed Article in Fort Worth Star-Telegram

clip art of boy doing mathThe Fort Worth Star-Telegram published an editorial on Monday, Sept. 29, by alumna Deborah Norwood, BS '97, a teacher at Seguin High School. Norwood wrote about the importance of math in education: "Without math, there is no rocket science." Norwood wrote, "Mathematics needs to be viewed as a second language that uses symbols in place of words to convey meaningful expressions. It needs to be a language that transitions as effortlessly to the science classroom as does the written word from the English classroom to social studies. Like any second language, the earlier someone is exposed to the components of the new language, the easier it is to learn and to become fluent." Click here to read the full article.
