Rams Crack Top-25 for First Time

Theo Nabassi leads the Rams with five goals on the season.

The Texas Wesleyan University men’s soccer team won a pair of games last week to improve to 6-0 overall and break into the NAIA top-25 for the first time. The Rams moved from receiving votes to 24th in the latest coaches’ poll.

At 6-0, the Rams are off to the best start in program history.  Last week they defeated then 6th ranked Oklahoma City University 2-1 and then took a rain soaked 1-0 win over Bethany College to remain undefeated.

The most recent poll also marks the first time that both the men’s and women’s teams have been ranked at the same time. The Lady Rams dropped one spot to 22nd after a 1-1 week.

Head coach Josh Gibbs, who coaches both the men’s and women’s team, commented on the dedication of his players. “The players have earned it,” Gibbs said.  “The coaching staff hasn’t changed anything, the players just committed to putting in the hard work which has led to good results.”

Texas Wesleyan will return to action on Friday, when they travel to Chickasha, OK, to take on the University of Science & Arts (OK) who received votes in the latest poll with a 4-1 record. That game is scheduled for a 3 p.m. start. Get all the latest Wesleyan athletics news at www.ramsports.net.

Wesleyan Horse Club Meets

"Sodulla" by Kit Hall, pencil, 2009The first meeting to organize Wesleyan’s first Horse Club was held on Sept. 4. There were nine people present. Each person had a special horse story. Much discussion was had regarding each person’s experiences with horses and hopes for the club. Students, faculty, and staff were present.  Experience with horses ranged from very little to 30+ years of riding and training.

Most conversation at the meeting centered on how to learn about and promote the horse human bond.  The group discussed such activities as sponsoring horses at equine assisted therapy centers, trail rides, fundraising for rescue organizations, and demonstrations by training specialists on their special brand of training.  What everyone had in common was a basic interest in learning more about the positive impact horses have on a person’s life and how they can network with others to promote that bond.

You do not need to have a horse to benefit from this new club. You just need to have an interest in learning more about horses and be a member of the Wesleyan community.  All students, staff and faculty are invited to come and be a part of this 'first-ever' club.

The next meeting to continue forming this club and establishing a mission will be held from 12:15 to 1:15 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 22, in the Nenetta  Burton Carter Building #112 (#22 on the campus map). Mark your calendars -

please plan on attending and bring a friend along for the ride!!  Feel free to forward this information to any prospective members. Contact Professor Kit Hall at khall@txwes.edu for further information.

Clip art of someone giving a helping handThe Mentorship Program for the freshman and transfer students will begin this fall. Recent changes made to the program:

  • The transfer and freshman mentorship programs have been combined into one large program.
  • With the recent changes, more mentors will be needed than ever before!
  • Some mentors in the past have already taken part in mentoring at least one freshman and a transfer student, and with the new changes this opportunity will become available to all mentors. Please consider being a mentor to more than one student.

Texas Wesleyan University would like to serve our students as efficiently as possible. In order to ensure that our mentorship program is effective, the University would like to introduce new Wesleyan students to mentors with similar interests. In an effort to attain compatible matches, please complete this form at http://www.txwes.edu/freshmentor/index.htm and submit.  For more information, call Blair Ensign at (817) 531-4923 or email bensign@txwes.edu.
