Job Description:

The Editor-in-Chief of The Rambler ensures that all content providers understand assignments for the print edition. It is also the Editor’s responsibility to work with content providers to create content in the most appropriate format to fit the story, including providing consistent and accurate coverage of Wesleyan and Wesleyan-related events. The Editor is also responsible for working with the Director/Producer of Rambler TV to ensure that content from The Rambler and Rambler TV provides a complete picture of Texas Wesleyan University. The Editor may also be used as a source for Rambler TV. The Editor is also responsible for working with the Digital Media Editor to ensure that content from The Rambler is available on www.therambler.org. The Editor ensures that all printing issues are dealt with in a timely fashion to ensure that The Rambler meets the printer’s deadline. The Editor also completes stories when other staffers are unable to complete those stories. The Editor must be familiar with The Rambler policies manual and statement of ethical behavior in student media. The Editor has the traditional editorial freedoms and responsibilities of professional journalism.
 
Specific duties include:
• Work with all content producers for development and management of Rambler projects, including posting to social media outlets
• Edit all stories for each edition of the paper
• Work with content producers and Faculty Adviser to ensure a system of three edits per story
• Send complete Rambler pdf to Digital Media Editor for Issuu.com presence
• Send pdfs to printer for each edition of the The Rambler
• Plan, assign and budget content for The Rambler, in conjunction with the The Rambler and Rambler TV student leaders, Faculty Adviser and Faculty Liaison
• Work with Digital Media Editor to develop two-way communication opportunities with print and online audiences (feedback, forums, polls and citizen journalism)
• Create a biweekly podcast of Rambler stories from the print edition to be uploaded to website
• Adhere to all Rambler social media policies
• Ensure that important breaking news stories are covered and work with Digital Media Editor to update content within one hour of content creation
• Adhere to all copyright law and correct mistakes on the site
• Work with students from Mass Communication courses, in conjunction with Faculty Adviser and Faculty Liaison
• Attend regularly scheduled meetings for all staff
• Meet regularly with the Faculty Adviser and Faculty Liaison to keep them updated on progress and any potential problems or concerns with the print edition (i.e., legal, ethical, internal discipline, budgets, equipment needs, etc.)
• Serve on the editorial board for The Rambler
• Maintain a minimum (but announced) schedule of office hours to address all potential concerns of the staff and Texas Wesleyan community
• Keep up with e-mail, phone messages and campus mail and return messages same day
• Supervise content producers for The Rambler to ensure that they are working correct hours
• Evaluate staff on a regular basis, including a written evaluation at midterm and semester’s end
• Work with faculty, staff and administrators to portray a positive and professional image of The Rambler on campus
• Maintain Rambler equipment to ensure proper functioning, availability and cleanliness
• Other duties as assigned
