Texas Wesleyan is a United Methodist institution with a tradition in the liberal arts and sciences with professional and career preparation. As a small, private, four-year coeducational university, Wesleyan delivers a solid undergraduate curriculum and select graduate programs to a diverse student body. Academic areas include the arts and sciences, business, education, health science/nurse anesthesia, and law. Degree programs range from the bachelor's and master's level to doctoral level. The institution serves both resident and non-resident students and offers opportunities for part-time and evening study for working adults at multiple locations throughout the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex. Texas Wesleyan's core purpose
Wesleyan is dedicated to providing students with the personal attention they need to develop to their full potential as individuals and as members of the world community. Heritage

The school was founded in 1890 and has served Fort Worth, Texas, longer than any other institution of higher learning. Wesleyan is located in historic Polytechnic Heights, just seven minutes from downtown, where the Texas Wesleyan School of Law is located. Wesleyan also has a satellite location south of Fort Worth in the city of Burleson.

Faculty

Of the 165 full-time faculty members, eighty-one percent hold a doctorate or highest degree in their respective fields. The student-faculty ratio is 14:1, with an average class size of 16 students.

 

 

 

 

Students

A student population of 3,333 men and women attend Texas Wesleyan (fall 2009). Minority students constitute 33% of the student body. Sixty-five percent of 1,342 applicants were admitted for fall 2009. The average GPA of the 188 students in the freshman class was a 3.2. Ninety percent of all students are from Texas (61% from Tarrant County), and 10% are from other states and nations.

Nearly half of the student body is enrolled in undergraduate studies. Full-time students represent 77% of undergraduates, 65% of graduates, and 55% at the School of Law. Enrollment by school: Natural and Social Sciences, 498; Business Administration, 329 plus 52 graduate; Education, 316 plus 255 graduate and 24 doctoral; Arts and Letters, 304; Nurse Anesthesia, 383 plus 37 doctorate; Law, 795.

Wesleyan Scholars Program

Wesleyan provides motivated students the opportunity to participate in an Honors Program that will recognize their outstanding academic work beyond degree requirements and enrich their university experience. This program consists of two components: university honors and departmental honors. Both provide a forum for student-to-student and student-to-faculty exchange of ideas across discipline boundaries and affirm the university as a place of informed and reasoned dialogue.

Campus

The historic campus is located on more than 75 acres just 7 minutes from downtown. Two residence halls and a student apartment complex housed 286 undergraduates and 62 graduate students in the fall of 2009. Campus facilities include the Thad Smotherman Theatre and Nicholas Martin Hall, a concert and recital space. New for 2010 is a $3 million fitness center with cardio, weights, and aerobics. The 100,000-square-foot School of Law is located downtown across from the Water Gardens at 1515 Commerce Street.

Library

The 92,000 sq. ft. West Library features three floors of library resources, including books, periodicals, electronic resources, special collections, the Methodist Archives, and more. With complete wireless accessibility and as the home of the Academic Success Center, Freshman Advising, and the Honors Lounge, students value the library as a prime destination for learning. The Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning also provides educational resources, instructional innovation, and professional growth opportunities to faculty. The lower floor houses computer classrooms and labs, media services, Information Technology, and the campus mailroom and copy center.

Opportunities

There are over 35 student organizations, including Academic, Religious, Government, Greek, Special Interest, Service, and Social.

 

 

Off campus and international

Wesleyan offers many study abroad opportunities, including semester-long studies and shorter trips associated with classes here on the Wesleyan campus. Recent trips include Brazil, Croatia, Scotland, and Spain.

 

Athletics

Texas Wesleyan is the home of the 2006 NAIA men's basketball national champions and the seven-time table tennis national champs. Other recent championships and conference titles have been in baseball, golf, and women's soccer. There are twelve NAIA Division I teams and one club team sponsored by Texas Wesleyan's athletic department, including men's and women's soccer (fall), cross country (fall), basketball (winter), and track (spring); men's golf (spring) and baseball (spring); women's volleyball (fall) and softball (spring); and, table tennis. Junior Varsity baseball, men's basketball and men's soccer increase the participation opportunities for students at Wesleyan. The athletic department is supported by three student groups, the student trainers, the dance team, and the cheerleaders. Texas Wesleyan University has been a member of the Red River Athletic Conference of the NAIA since fall 2002. The member institutions include Bacone College (OK), Huston-Tillotson University (TX), Jarvis Christian College (TX), Langston University (OK), LSU-Shreveport (LA), Our Lady of the Lake University (TX), Northwood University (TX), Paul Quinn College (TX), University of the Southwest (NM), Southwestern Assemblies of God (TX), University of Texas at Brownsville (TX), Texas College (TX), Texas Wesleyan University (TX), and Wiley College (TX).

Success after Texas Wesleyan

Our alumni become active and influential members of their community and chosen fields. Many of our education graduates become teachers in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex. Basketball coaching legend Robert Hughes holds the record for most career victories for high school boys' basketball. U.S. Representative Kay Granger and State Representatives Marc Veasey and Phil King all began their political careers at Texas Wesleyan. Three-time Emmy Award-winner Tamlyn Wright works as a freelance art director and production designer in Hollywood. Another theatre alumnus and Los Angeles-based actor, Michael Erwin, can be seen on The O.C., Incredible Hulk, CSI Miami, and the NCIS series. Alumnus Michael Skipper won four Tony Awards in 2008 for In the Heights, a musical that garnered 13 nominations.

Lectureships and symposia

The annual Willson Lecture brings outstanding speakers to campus. Through the years, these speakers have delivered messages that have challenged and inspired thousands of Texas Wesleyan students, faculty, and staff. The Goosetree Women's Symposium began in 1981 in an effort to inspire and give support to young women. It is the goal of the Symposium to foster awareness of women's issues and to recognize the achievements of women in both professional and academic endeavors. The School of Business Administration is a sponsor of the Fort Worth Business Hall of Fame. Those honored as the city's Business Executive of the Year visit the campus to share their insight and promote business as a challenging profession.

Tuition

Tuition and fees are $17,760 (2009– 2010); room and board ranges from $3,000–$8,320. Nearly 87% of students receive some sort of financial aid, averaging about $12,500 a year.

 

Endowment

Approximately 75% of the university's endowment supports student scholarships.
