About Us

The Texas Wesleyan University Mentorship Program originated in the spring of 2005 as part of the Texas Wesleyan University Retention Plan. The program began as a mentorship between faculty and staff matched with incoming freshman. Approximately seventy faculty and staff volunteered their support and were matched to the students by comparing personal interests, hobbies, and majors. In fall of 2008, Wesleyan began offering the Mentorship Program for the new transfer students.

The decision to offer the Mentorship Program to the transfer students was a direct result of transfer students asking to be part of the Program. Wesleyan listened, and thus the Mentorship Program was expanded to include our transfer students.

Through one-on-one relationship building and guidance from volunteer faculty, staff and upperclassmen mentors, it is the program's goal that as many incoming students as possible make a smooth transition from high school to college or 2 year-college to a 4 year-college. Such guidance provides a solid foundation for our freshmen and transfers and affords the opportunity for them to be successful students throughout their entire college career.

Match Support

The main goal of the Match Support System (MSS) is to ensure that communication and interaction between mentors and mentees flow efficiently and effectively. As a result, the incoming new students are properly served and the mentor volunteers are not overwhelmed.

The MSS staff serves to remind the mentor volunteers of their commitments, important dates (such as registration, advising and birthdays) that the students need to be informed of and to simply remind the mentors to check on the progress of their matches. They will endeavor to maintain current contact lists of both the participating students and the volunteer mentors.

The MSS staff will also provide the mentors with an information sheet that includes a list of casual activities that interest the mentee, as well as events on and off campus at little to no cost for the menor/mentee to attend.

Help Make a Difference

The Texas Wesleyan Mentorship Program invites you to assist in ensuring that new college students are successful during their first year of college, which is crucial to retaining and developing students for a promising future.

The Texas Wesleyan Mentorship Program was established to directly address this issue. Through one-on-one relationship building and guidance from volunteer faculty, staff, and upperclassmen mentors, it is the program's goal that as many incoming students as possible make a smooth transition from high school to college. Such guidance provides a solid foundation for our students and affords the opportunity for them to be successful students throughout their entire college career.

In order to serve our freshmen as efficiently as possible, the Texas Wesleyan Mentorship Program endeavors to introduce freshmen to mentors with similar interests and backgrounds. When a match is made, the mentors agree to call their student to remind them of important dates and to encourage them to register early for classes. Also, mentors commit to having at least three informal meetings with their students to check their overall progress. These meetings can include coffee breaks, going to on and off campus events, or simply having a causal office meeting.

To ensure that communication and interaction between mentors and student's are effective, a Match Support System (MSS) has been developed so that student's are properly served and the mentors are not overwhelmed. The MSS staff serves to remind the mentors of their commitments and to check the progress of their matches.
