Last week, Newsweek, the weekly news publication that has covered some of the biggest stories of the last 80 years, announced they would cease print publication at the end of the year and move to a digital format.
Kay Colley, assistant professor of mass communication, says the closedown of one of the nation’s most noted newsmagazines highlights the need for an integrated media plan – and, just as important, the need for content that is relevant to readers.
“If people don’t think a news organization – and what they produce – is relevant to their life,” Colley said, “then why should they watch it? Why should they read it?”
Mass communication at Texas Wesleyan is preparing students for the new media world by teaching students to analyze their audience and provide relative content – as well as teaching them how to create content in a variety of different mediums.
“You have to have an integrated strategy of media,” Colley said. “The medium is not the message.”
