Slabach appoints VP for Finance and Administration

After a national search, Texas Wesleyan President Frederick G. Slabach announced today the appointment of Karen Montgomery as the university’s Vice President for Finance and Administration. Montgomery will assume her role Monday, April 2.

“The search was incredibly competitive with more than 50 applicants,” Slabach said. “But after narrowing our search to three well-qualified candidates, it became very clear that Ms. Montgomery possessed the breadth and depth of experience that would best provide the university with skillful strategic and tactical financial leadership.”

Montgomery brings extensive financial administrative and budgeting experience to the table. From 2006-11, Montgomery served as Fort Worth’s assistant city manager and was appointed as its first chief financial officer. In this role she oversaw management services departments including Budget, Finance, Human Resources, Equipment Services and Information Technology. She also led the creation of the city’s audit & finance advisory committee, developed 5-year financial forecasting for the city’s $500 million operating budget, restored timely reporting of the city’s financial statements, and earned upgrades in the city’s bond ratings by Moody’s, S&P, and Fitch.

Prior to this, Montgomery served as Director of Finance for the Douglas County Government in Colorado, where she was responsible for directing the county’s financial functions relative to accounting, budgeting, debt service, fixed assets, payroll and purchasing, and she oversaw a $200 million annual budget. She has also served in other financial leadership positions including CFO for El Paso County, Deputy Executive Director for the Oklahoma Public Employees Retirement System, Director of Finance/Treasurer for the City of Norman and Business Manager for Norman Public Schools.

“President Slabach has developed a very strong vision for Texas Wesleyan, and he definitely has the university on the move,” Montgomery said. “I find this momentum compelling and challenging. I look forward to joining his leadership team and using my knowledge, experience and skills to lead the financial growth and management of the university.”

Slabach expressed his appreciation for the university’s interim CFO, Lori Logan, who has been serving in the role since last fall.

“Ms. Logan stepped into a very large role and has done a remarkable job managing the university’s financial matters during this search process,” Slabach said. “I am grateful for the leadership she has provided, particularly as it relates to her efforts in preparing the fiscal 2012-13 operating budget. Her counsel has been invaluable, and I know she welcomes the arrival of Ms. Montgomery.”

Montgomery holds a Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting from the University of Oklahoma and a Master of Public Administration from the University of Colorado at Denver. She is a certified public accountant and holds a membership in the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Texas Society of CPAs.

Montgomery is the proud mother of two daughters: Amanda, who is attending medical school at the University of Oklahoma’s Health Sciences Center, and Melissa, who is an associate attorney at Vinson & Elkins in Dallas. Melissa attended the University of Oklahoma College of Law. Montgomery describes her family as “bleeding Sooner red,” but looks forward to adding some Texas Wesleyan blue and gold.
