As hundreds of Fort Worth Independent School District (FWISD) teachers prepare to start classes on Monday, two former FWISD elementary teachers have something very different planned – teaching in Saudi Arabia.
Last week, Mike Myers ’02, M.Ed. ’12, Christine Hesse Myers ’03, M.Ed. ’07 and their children – Macy, 3, and Caley, 2 – headed out on for their new assignment. This school year, they will be teaching in a school for children of ARAMCO employees.
Mike will teach middle school math and science and Christina will work as a substitute teacher at the elementary school until a position is available. Last year, they were both teachers at D. McRae Elementary School. That’s where they learned about the relocation opportunity.
To help keep up with family and friends back home, Christina has a blog to provide updates and showcase their surroundings.
A Texas Wesleyan romance
Mike and Christina, who recently celebrated their seventh wedding anniversary, met in 2002 when they were both students at Texas Wesleyan. Mike earned his undergraduate degree in biology while Christina earned hers in education. Both went on to earn graduate degrees in education from Texas Wesleyan as well.
Wesleyan ties, family ties
Since graduating, Mike and Christina have remained connected with Texas Wesleyan, both professionally and personally.
The close proximity of D. McRae to the campus has been a good fit for our education students to go to either of their classrooms to observe. In addition to working with Texas Wesleyan students, Mike and Christina have worked with faculty on projects.
Mike is a member and former treasurer of the Poly Wesleyan Kiwanis. Christina has served on the Texas Wesleyan Alumni Association Board.
Mike's mother is Sandy Myers M.Ed. ’98, project coordinator for grants and research.
