The Distance Between Us: A Memoir by Reyna Grande
Award-winning author Reyna Grande will be keynote speaker at the 2013 Faye Goostree Women’s Symposium.
Grande was recently nominated for a National Book Critics Circle Award for her memoir, The Distance Between Us, published August 2012. Her other novels include Across a Hundred Mountains, an American Book Award winner, and Dancing with Butterflies, the recipient of an International Latino Book Award.
Distance has been described as a “coming-of-age story” as well as “a timely and vivid example of how poverty and immigration can destroy a family.” Her memoir takes us on an extraordinary journey that explores the painful decisions made by many families seeking a better life in in the United States. Grande vividly describes her heroic journey to find her place in a new and uncertain country, while giving voice to the experiences of other children who find themselves caught between two worlds.
Dianne Solís, senior writer at The Dallas Morning News, who will join Grande on stage to discuss “The Craft of Writing.” She formerly covered immigration for The Wall Street Journal from their Houston and Mexico City bureaus, and has written for public radio and television. Solís, a Nieman Fellow at Harvard, was raised in the San Joaquin Valley of California where her grandparents settled after fleeing the violence of the Mexican Revolution.
