Clinical Sites and Affiliations

CLINICAL HOURS
Clinical students (RRNAs) are scheduled 5 shifts per week on the average. Shifts are typically longer than 8 hours. RRNAs are on a rotating call schedule and should expect to work 40-70 hours per week on the average. If call is taken from home, this will be viewed as committed time and the RRNA will be given the next day off even when not called back into the hospital. The COA bases this policy on the fact that learners have numerous responsibilities and they need planned time away from clinical commitments for activities such as studying and research. (6/3/02)

ROTATIONS
During the clinical curriculum (Phase II), each RRNA will meet specific objectives in the following in-house areas (where appropriate):

Recovery Unit
Holding Unit
Anesthesia Department Management
Surgical Satellite Pharmacy Unit
Other locations as available

The majority of the primary training facilities do not meet all clinical requirements for graduation. Therefore, you may be required to complete a specialty rotation at a non-primary training facility. These facilities may not be in the same geographical location as the student's primary training facility, thereby, requiring the student to relocate for the length of the specialty rotation - usually one to two months. Transportation to these facilities is at the student's expense. Some of the rotation hospitals provide housing, while others do not. When a student relocates to a facility that does not provide housing, the expense of housing is the responsibility of the student. Meal costs are the student's responsibility. In the event that the rotation site is located in a different state, the cost of licensure in the state where the rotation is to be completed is the student's responsibility.

EXPECTATIONS
RRNAs are expected to be in pre-clinical conference at the scheduled time.

RRNAs are also expected to be in class (even when they are on call or post-call). If an RRNA is absent from class, it will be counted as an absent/vacation day.

In addition, RRNAs are expected to accept all assignments from clinical faculty in a professional manner. Failure to do so may result in a day of suspension (counted as a vacation day). The proper way to handle an objectionable assignment is to perform such assignment and later take up the matter with the clinical coordinator and/or director of the program. Enthusiasm for learning is appreciated by clinical instructors.

RRNAs will be encouraged to be in clinical whenever possible. If it is necessary for the RRNA to miss a clinical day, due to bad weather, he/she will either use a vacation day or will be given an opportunity for a make-up day.
