Since coming to Texas Wesleyan in 1979 he has served as Associate Provost, Chairperson of the Psychology Department, Director of Pre-Professional Studies Program, Dean School of Education and Interim Provost. He was selected by his colleagues in 1995 to receive the Earl Brown Distinguished Faculty Award for outstanding teaching and community service. He received the University Service Award in 1994 and the Wesleyan Campus Flame Award from Wesleyan’s Alumni Association in 1993.

Dr. Henderson currently serves as a Texas delegate to the National Assembly of the American Cancer Society, the Vice Chair of the American Cancer Society's Texas Division Board and as a board member of the Tarrant County Unit of the American Cancer Society. He has been a volunteer for the American Cancer Society for 22 years. Dr. Henderson was honored as the American Cancer Society Volunteer of Year in Tarrant County in 2000, the 1994 recipient of the Educator Ruby Pin Award from the Texas Division of the American Cancer Society and the Life Saver Award from the American Cancer Society in 1987. Dr. Henderson has served on the American Cancer Society's Texas Division Board for eight years and as the chairman of the board and a board member of the Fort Worth Unit of the American Cancer Society for 12 years.

In addition, Dr. Henderson was named a Fellow for the Fort Worth Independent School District Adopt-A-School program in 1989, and won the 1987 Individual Volunteer Award for the Adopt-A-School program. In 1987 he also received the Outstanding Volunteer Award from the Mental Health Association of Tarrant County.
