How UBMS Brings Students, Math, and Science together

The Upward Bound Math and Science Program has two core components that allow students to connect with the material at their own pace while still providing a firm platform for them to stand on. The two Core Components are the Academic/Enrichment Saturdays and the UBMS Summer Component.

Enrichment Saturdays

All Participants must attend the mandatory Academic/Enrichment Saturdays held at least twice a month during the school year (September - May) to receive test preparation tutorials, college preparation services, college, career, community service, and cultural enrichment activities. Please see the Academic Component Schedule for dates and times.

2009-2010 Academic Saturday Class Schedule

Academic Class 1- 9:00 - 9:45 a.m.
Academic Class 2 - 9:50 - 10:35 a.m.
Academic Class 3 - 10:40 - 11:25 a.m.
Academic Class 4 - 11:30 - 12:15 p.m.

Tutoring

Tutoring Sessions will be held at Trimble Technical High School, North Side High School and Diamond Hill High School between the hours of 3 - 6 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Students are assigned to attend the mandatory tutoring sessions will be responsible for bringing textbooks, assignments, homework and test review materials related to their calsses.

Summer Component

Eight-Weeks Summer Non-Residential Program for Incoming 9th - 11th Graders Only
Eight-weeks of non-residential summer programming will take place on the campus of Texas Wesleyan University for all rising 9th, 10th, and 11th grade participants to experience life on a college campus and obtain the academic skills to prepare for postsecondary educational programs that lead to careers in the fields of math and science. Participants will spend at least five (5) hours a day in academic courses (math, science, composition/literature, and foreign language) designed to prepare them for college-level academics.

Participants will arrive by 8:30 a.m. on Mondays - Thursdays and will be dismissed at 2:55 p.m. The daily schedule for the summer component at Texas Wesleyan University will be as follows:

Friday field trips will be arranged to expose all participants to colleges and career sites with on focus on math and science. All field trips will originate at Texas Wesleyan University and chartered buses will take the participants and staff to field trip locations. The schedule for the Friday field trips is as follows:

Bridge Program
Graduating Participants Only

An eight-week non-residential summer "bridge" program will be offered to all participants that have graduated from high school to facilitate the transition to college. All eligible participants will enroll in at least six hours of college credit courses (math & science preferably). The cost of enrolling in these credit courses will be covered through federal financial aid, scholarships, and project funds. The Project Coordinator will meet individually with the bridge students each week to monitor and discuss their academic progress in addition to receiving tutoring and mentoring services from the Summer Activity Assistants.
