Online giving now being accepted for annual Wesleyan Encore scholarship
Theatre Wesleyan and the Office of Advancement have announced that online giving is now available for the Wesleyan Encore scholarship.
Wesleyan Encore was founded in 2002 and is a group of university alumni who participated in theatre productions during their years at Texas Wesleyan. Their goal is to support Theatre Wesleyan by promoting its productions and awarding an annual scholarship to deserving theatre students.
"Online giving to Wesleyan Encore is a convenient and easy way to contribute to the organization and support the Texas Wesleyan theatre program," said Scott Cannon '77. Cannon is a member of Encore and serves as the university's coordinator for events and scheduling. "Being a founding member of Wesleyan Encore, I find it very inspiring and rewarding to assist the recipients of the award to earn their college degree and pursue their dreams. Our goal is to remain active and visible and provide financial assistance to select and deserving theatre students."
Alumna Debbie Brown '78 says that Encore "is a great way of maintaining relationships from college, as well as supporting newer graduates and students who have theatre in common." In encouraging alumni to give back, she also said, "think of what the theatre program at Wesleyan meant to you, and what it could mean to future students."
Previous recipients include Kimberly Owen and Alfredo Tamayo, who were awarded the scholarship following a performance of Oklahoma! in April 2018. "The online giving will be such a quick and easy way to help make a difference," Owen said. "Donations directly affect a student and allow for them to keep pursing their passion."
Tamayo said, "this scholarship can help a lot of students to stay at this university. As a student here, I have learned a lot and I could not be more grateful to have received this award. It makes me feel like all my hard work is paying off and this scholarship can also make another student feel that way."
Members of Wesleyan Encore and other donors may direct gifts to the Wesleyan Encore Fund, and volunteers from among the Wesleyan Encore membership select one or more students annually to receive awards, the size of which depend upon available funds and the number of students selected.
Awards are given as above and beyond students’ existing scholarships or other financial aid and are applied directly to the student recipients’ accounts at the University.
To be eligible, students must be freshmen, sophomore or junior Theatre majors in good academic standing and must submit an application to the Wesleyan Encore selection committee. Students will be chosen on the basis of their accomplishments in Theatre and career goals. Financial need is not a consideration in determining the awards. Awards are announced at the Alumni Night at the annual Spring Musical.
