PLAYMARKET: PREMIERE PRODUCTIONS OF ORIGINAL PLAYS
SEPT. 28  - OCT. 1, 2023
Playmarket, developed and directed by Professor of Theatre Connie Whitt-Lambert, has presented over two dozen student- and alumni-written scripts both on campus and in New York City since 1999. The 2023 Edition of Playmarket will include fully-staged short plays that will allow our cast and designers to rehearse and present a work-in-progress directly in collaboration with the writer.

In the winner of the 2004 New York Drama Critics Circle and Outer Critics Circle Awards, we follow Esther, a lonely, single African-American woman in 1905 who makes her living sewing beautiful corsets and ladies’ undergarments. There is warm affection between her and the Orthodox Jewish man who sells fabrics to her, but any relationship between them is completely forbidden. Esther eventually embarks on a letter-writing relationship with a mysterious suitor who moves to New York. They embark on an unhappy marriage, leading Esther to realize that only her self-reliance and certainty of her own worth will see her through life’s challenges.

From one of America's most-produced living playwrights, Nan has decided to teach her abusive husband Kyle a lesson. With the help of her friends, she tapes Kyle to a chair and forces him to watch as they reenact scenes from their painful past. In the piece de resistance, they plan to cover the room in meat and honey so Kyle will be mauled by a bear. Through this night of emotional trials and ridiculous theatrics, Nan and Kyle are both freed from their past in this smart, dark revenge comedy.
