SWATA conference recognizes Texas Wesleyan athletic training students, faculty

Four Texas Wesleyan students and faculty were recognized at the Southwest Athletic Trainers Association (SWATA) annual sports medicine symposium July 18-19 in Frisco.

SWATA is District 6 of the National Athletic Trainer’s Association (NATA), and the annual symposium offers continuing education and research for students and professionals.

Two student proposals were accepted for presentation in the student research portion of the conference. Meghan Finely presented a poster titled “Cam Deformity with a Torn Labrum of the Hip in an Amateur Disc Golf Player.”

Paige Wheaton was honored twice at the SWATA conferencePaige Wheaton won the student poster contest with her submission titled “Recurring ACL Tear in a Female Collegiate Volleyball Player with an Accessory Hamstring Muscle.” Wheaton also received the Texas Orthopedic Associates Olan B. Locker Scholarship. 

Amber Marlett’s life-saving efforts in fall 2013 were recognized by the SWATA Student Senate with the Excellence in Athletic Training Award. The award recognizes the significant impact made on the lives of individuals through life-saving techniques in a case when the individual's life would have otherwise been altered considerably.

Laura Kunkel, MS, LAT, ATC., athletic training program clinical coordinator, received the James Dodson New Horizon Award recognizing her unique and immediate contributions to the SWATA and the athletic training profession.
