Five students from Texas Wesleyan University participated in the 14th annual National Intercollegiate Mediation Tournament at Drake University Law School in Des Moines, Iowa on Nov. 1-3, and once again, the team placed among the top teams at the event.
The team consisted of Political Science majors Tyler Mendez, Michele Sackett-Dgracia and Kaylyn Carew, Paralegal Studies major Alan Villafana and Liberal Studies major Rachel Sanchez. They were selected to represent Texas Wesleyan at the national event. Forty-two teams participated this year, including schools from Canada and India.
The Texas Wesleyan team of Sackett-Dgracia, Villafana and Carew advanced to the semifinal and final rounds, and ultimately placed second in the Mediator Division. Sackett-Dgracia represented the team in the final mediation.
In addition, Mendez placed 14th and Villafana was 11th in the individual mediator awards. By placing in the top 15 at the national tournament, Mendez and Villafana now receive the designation "All-American Mediator."
The Texas Wesleyan mediation team is coached by Barbara Kirby, J.D., director of the Paralegal Studies program.
