Dr. Deaton is a Texas Wesleyan veteran, teaching at the school for since 1967. “I love the fact that the university is small and you get the opportunity to influence students directly, to get to know them, to give them personal attention and help. Professors at Texas Wesleyan generally have time to be active in research and can also get the students involved.”

His own list of publications is lengthy and he considers helping students with research one of his primary objectives. “If students want to go on in any kind of science, they must know what research is and understand the scientific method.”

Although he is interested in minerals and fossils, going back to school for geology at age 40, physics is his specialty. He has taught physics to a lot of pre-medical and pre-dental students and been an advisor to the pre-medical and pre-dental student organization. “We just have a minor in physics at Texas Wesleyan, but I teach it in the same way it would be taught at bigger universities. It is just as challenging.” Dr. Deaton is also the sponsor of the honor society Alpha Chi.
