About Dr. Jay Brown

“I really look forward to the start of each semester. It’s all about new students getting a new look at psychology. Most of the students in my classes are non-residential students. They’ve been in the real world, so they know why they need a diploma to get ahead. It’s my place to teach them why they came to my class. Why psychology is something that they want to learn. And how it can benefit them in their careers and in life in general. I make sure that the students leave my class knowing something new. That they will walk out a different person than when they walked in.”

“Texas Wesleyan’s size is a special benefit for most students. The school is sized so that I can teach a variety of courses. That gives me the chance to convey the bigger picture of how the classes and information fit together to expand their minds. In larger schools, they never get the same teacher for several classes. So they don’t get that continuity across courses. They don’t get that overarching view of the field of psychology. Here, they truly get the big picture of what psychology involves and what it means to them. And I really enjoy being able to give that knowledge to them. I can’t believe that I’m actually getting paid to do this.”

“The number one trend in psychology now is hands-on involvement in research. I am very active in getting students involved in research. For example, subjects like self control and decision making. We explore how they make decisions and what influences them to make good decisions. So they better understand themselves and how to deal with the people they come into contact with. It gives them a chance to see the practical applications of psychology, and that ranges from everything from how they play video games to their personal connection to religion. It’s real eye-opening to them, and sometimes their research results in information and insights that get printed in conference journals and get presented at conferences.”
