Exonerated death row inmate to speak as part of 'Journey to Justice' event
Texas Wesleyan University Religious Life and the Texas Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty (TCADP) welcome Juan Melendez and Tim Cole as they present "Journey to Justice: A Speakers' Tour" at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 1, in the Science Lecture Theater.
Melendez spent 17 years, 8 months and 1 day on death row in Florida for a crime he did not commit. He was exonerated and freed on Jan. 3, 2002. He is among the 146 people who have been wrongfully convicted and released from death rows nationwide.
Melendez will be sharing his extraordinary story about the injustices of the death penalty. He will bring his powerful message of faith, courage and survival to Texas Wesleyan as part of a tour sponsored by the TCADP, with support from the Harold Simmons Foundation.
Tim Cole, former District Attorney in Monague County and former Assistant District Attorney in Wise County, is now in private practice as a criminal defense attorney.
This event is open to all students and faculty. Contact Rev. Robert Flowers at robkenjium@gmail.com with questions.
