Criminal Justice Club Meeting Sept 2024

The Criminal Justice Club is a chance to connect with like-minded individuals, discuss current events and prepare students for their future careers. The club held its first meeting on Sept. 10, 2024, inviting John Diggs, member of the Texas Wesleyan Criminal Justice Advisory Board and Brigadier General and Commander of the 1st Brigade of the Texas State Guard, to share a few words and mingle with the students.

“You all are the professionals in the room when it comes to understanding how the legal system works and the goals and intent of it. It’s something you need to be prepared for, and I think the folks I have met in the room will be,” said Diggs. “Realize the importance of what you do, embrace it, enjoy it — you are the future.”

Criminal Justice Club President and Guest Speaker

Dr. Cary Adkinson, professor of criminal justice, says that for every meeting they have, the room is full and that, “we enjoy having this educational experience.”

The club meets monthly and consistently brings in guest speakers, many of whom are alumni. It is open to any student.

“My hope is that they form lasting friendships which they utilize after graduation when they are in the professions in earnest.  My goal is to provide participating students with a view behind the curtain; truly see the intricacy of the criminal justice system,” said Dr. Eddy Lynton, professor of criminal justice.

“We’re always going to need officers, attorneys, firefighters and military members who are passionate about serving the people in their community, state and country, especially in today’s time,” said Gino Martinez, president of the Criminal Justice Club.

Gino and his classmates understand the importance of “creating good apples” and want to become the next professionals in the criminal justice field. “At every meeting, we usually have guest speakers that offer a student internship, and a possible job offer,” said Gino. They also hosted a resume workshop where students learned the importance of resumes and what they can do, building character and confidence. “We help our students network to create connections.”
