This month’s edition of the alumni newsletter focuses on another long-standing clinical residency site: St. Alexius Medical Center in Bismarck, North Dakota.

While Bismarck only boasts a population of approximately 74,000, it is the capital of a state known for its hiking, fishing, mountain biking and golf. Bismarck also holds a 2007 world record — 8,962 people created human snow angels on the grounds of the State Capitol. Never a dull moment for outdoor enthusiasts.

St. Alexius, a regional medical center holds Level 2 trauma status and offers a full line of inpatient and outpatient services. A clinical site since 1995, St. Alexius trains approximately 4 Texas Wesleyan University students each cohort. Supportive of professional networking, the students at St. Alexius attend the state anesthesia conference each year. This year’s senior residents: Diane Drews, Brittany Payne and Matthew Richards presented their doctoral scholarly project entitled “Postoperative Pain Control Comparing Opioid Free Anesthesia to Opioid Anesthesia in Patients Undergoing Laparoscopic Abdominal Surgery.”  Another resident, Lance Cox, participated virtually with the North Dakota Congressional Delegation to advocate for CRNA’s at Mid-Year Assembly in Washington, D.C.
