See "Una Vida Linda" by Rolando Palacio, Oct. 16-Jan. 14

09.22.2023 | By: Texas Wesleyan University

The Bernice Coulter Templeton Gallery is proud to present “Una Vida Linda,” a show by Rolando Palacio. The exhibition presents a photography project based in the Latinx community of Southwest Detroit. Palacio began this documentary project in 2011 with the start of his MFA thesis at the University of Michigan. His attraction to Detroit began because of its great history for Latinx generational migration to Southwest Detroit, which to this day is known as “Mexican town.” Given this name and its reflection of the large population that settles there, Southwest Detroit is also home to a large Puerto Rican, Dominican and Central American population that Palacio has documented. This continuing project gives us a portrayal of a world that reflects an important growing population in our Nation.

There will be an Open Reception on Oct. 12 from 5-7 p.m. in the Gallery.

About the Artist

Rolando Palacio, born of Mexican immigrant parents, traveled throughout the U.S. as a migrant farm laborer. This experience impacted his view of art and the way he observed the world. As a young man he traveled throughout the Midwest with his family and in these spaces, he always found himself navigating between immigrant migrant camps and the world outside of these camps. His love for photography came from his desire to give voice to the individuals that exist in spaces hidden from society. After completing his undergrad at Michigan State University, Rolando went on to receive his MFA at the University of Michigan, where he further developed his craft in both photo and video. Rolando presently settles in the US where he continues documenting the world around him.
