Treading Lightly: Discussing Sensitive Topics in the Classroom

Eunice and James L. West LibraryThis session explores the challenge of discussing sensitive and controversial subjects in the classroom. It includes suggestions for introducing topics, such as giving students advanced notice and providing alternative assignments, as well as providing ground rules for discussion and debate.
A sample assignment will be provided to demonstrate how these guidelines can be implemented in class. Finally, workshop attendees are encouraged to participate in a Question and Answer session to discuss how they can broach difficult subjects in their own classes.
