The 7th-ranked Texas Wesleyan University men's golf team hosted the 17th Annual O.D. Bounds Golf Classic at Diamond Oaks Country Club on Monday.
Proceeds from the tournament benefited the O.D. Bounds Endowment, which supports the golf program at Texas Wesleyan, and raised the value of the four golf endowments at Texas Wesleyan to more than $730,000.
The event was attended by numerous alumni, friends and family, and the tournament was full with 34 participating teams and 138 individuals.
The tournament is named for a Texas Wesleyan golf legend, Orin Davis Bounds Jr., who served as the head coach of the Rams for 40 years. One of the most respected men in the golfing world, he was the first coach inducted into the NAIA Hall of Fame, was the inaugural member of the Texas Wesleyan Athletic Hall of Fame and was the first NAIA coach inducted into the Golf Coaches Association of America Hall of Fame.
Bounds, who passed away in 2004, led the Rams to 109 tournament victories, including three national championships.
Under Bounds' guidance, Texas Wesleyan became the most storied golf program in the NAIA. In 60 years of membership, they have made 53 national tournament appearances and tallied six national championships, 10 runner-up finishes, and 50 top-10 finishes.
After finishing sixth at last year's NAIA National Championship and snapping a streak of 19 consecutive top-five finishes, the Rams placed third in their season opener at NCAA Division I Abilene Christian University's Charles Coody Invitational. They will return to action at the NAIA Preview Invitational at LPGA International in Daytona Beach, Fla., Oct. 4-5.
