Aminah Orozco's journey from a young Hispanic girl from El Paso, Texas to becoming the head women's volleyball coach at Texas Wesleyan University is a testament to her passion and dedication for volleyball. Growing up in a sports-loving Hispanic family, Orozco's path to volleyball was unique and inspiring.

"Even before I was born, my dad used to coach soccer, basketball, you name it, everything but volleyball,” she said. By eighth grade, Orozco was very adventurous and loved challenges. Her father's coaching in every sport but volleyball sparked her curiosity about this sport, unknowingly setting her on a path that would shape her future.

Volleyball started beginning as a fun activity Orozco enjoyed with her two sisters but quickly evolved into her life’s calling. As a player, Orozco captured all-conference selections at Vernon College and Saint Gregory's University. She graduated from Saint Gregory's in 2013 with her bachelor's degree in biology.

She began coaching club volleyball in Texas, New Mexico and Oklahoma, eventually taking on the role of head coach at The University of Science and Arts Oklahoma. At UTSAO, she led the team to its highest win totals in program history and and consecutive Sooner Athletic Conference tournament appearances. She holds the program record for most wins by a head coach.

In March 2023, Orozco was named assistant coach for the University of North Texas volleyball, playing a key role in helping the Mean Green finish with a 17-15 (11-8 AAC) record and compete in their third National Invitational Volleyball Championship.

When Texas Wesleyan University reached out about the head coach position, Orozco felt an immediate connection. During the interview process, she "automatically bonded with all the staff and players." This quick connection laid the foundation for a strong start at the university.

Coach Orozco's Mexican heritage plays a significant role in her coaching style. She embodies the concept of "Carinosa," a term reflecting the affectionate and caring nature often associated with Mexican culture. "I'm not afraid to show my emotions, and I think it matters that you show students that you truly care about them," Orozco explains, highlighting how her cultural background enhances her ability to connect with her players.

Orozco's coaching philosophy revolves around what she calls “the big D's” — discipline, determination and dedication. She uses these principles to guide her students and bring out their A game. Her approach focuses on growth rather than just wins and losses, viewing setbacks as opportunities for improvement. Orozco is also a firm believer in a hands-on approach, often joining her team during practice sessions. This not only helps in bonding with her players, but also allows her to demonstrate her philosophy in action, inspiring and guiding her students through personal example.

Outside the court, Orozco is a Zumba instructor and Cross Fitter. She loves music, dance and Disney movies. “I love to sit and binge watch movies, especially Disney movies from the old ones to the new ones.”

Orozco strongly advocates for self-care, especially for student-athletes, whether it's a nighttime skincare routine, taking time to relax, praying or dimming the lights with soothing music to reflect — it's important.

What started as a fun activity fueled by her curiosity has turned into a fulfilling career. Let’s welcome our new head women's volleyball coach, Amina Orozco. We look forward to an exciting season ahead!
